STEM Celebrations in October
Computer Learning Month
Month of October
Computers now occupy almost every part of our lives, from the smartphones we spend our days communicating on, to the laptops and desktops that are the foundation of every business. Check out our 2018 NYSD webinar and accompanying resources to learn how engaging in computer science empowers young people for their future.
Join 4-H this October for the 11th National Youth Science Day (NYSD) and help kids learn computer science through hands-on fun. Over 150,000 kids will learn computer science with NYSD this October. Help 4-H reach their goal by ordering your kit today!
Campus Sustainability Month
Month of October
Held every October, Campus Sustainability Month is an international celebration of sustainability in higher education. Throughout the month, colleges and universities organize events on campus and elsewhere to engage and inspire incoming students and other campus stakeholders to become sustainability change agents. These events include teach-ins, sustainability pledge drives, zero-energy concerts, waste audits, green sporting events, letter writing campaigns, service projects and much more! For more information on how to get your school involved visit The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education website.
World Architecture Day
World Architecture Day is a day to show appreciation for the work architects do and to celebrate some of the great global architectural works. Celebrate Architecture day by learning how to encourage learners to understand science and engineering skills by reflecting on what is happening and processing the outcome with this paper table STEM activity.
World Farm Animals Day
Help celebrate World Farm Animals Day by learning how to model science on the farm and how to encourage youth to see the science that surrounds them.
World Space Week
More than 3,700 events in 80 countries celebrated the benefits of space and excitement about space exploration in 2017. This year looks to be even bigger with the theme “Space Unites The World.”
In collaboration with NASA, the NISE Network is creating a series of engaging, hands-on Earth and space science experiences with connections to science, technology, and society.
World Teacher Day
Click2Science appreciates these dedicated teachers and their hard work they put in throughout the whole year. And a special thanks to all the Out-of-School time teachers! Treat yourselves by going to see a new movie, eating at a new restaurant, bettering your STEM teaching skills, or whatever activity you love to do because you've earned it.
National Nano Day
National Nanotechnology Day helps raise awareness of nanotechnology, how it is currently used in products that enrich our daily lives, and the challenges and opportunities it holds for the future. Visit the National Informal STEM Education Network (NISE) for more nano celebrations.
Astronomy Day is a worldwide event observed each spring and fall. Local astronomical societies, planetariums, museums, and observatories will be sponsoring public viewing sessions, presentations, workshops, and other activities to increase public awareness about astronomy and our wonderful universe.
Learn to enable active STEM learning in your program through the topic of space with resources from NASA and beyond. Active learning engages youth in critical thinking and problem-solving. It builds their skills to be college and career ready - and supports them in developing a positive STEM identity.
Train Your Brain Day
Train Your Brain Day recognizes the power of the mind, and how training it to be positive can change our lives as a whole. Train your brain by trying out this activity on the process of reflecting on STEM activities to make a more meaningful learning experience.
Earth Science Day
Earth Sciences Week is a yearly event run by the American Geosciences Institute to promote the knowledge of Earth sciences at local, state, national, and international levels. Celebrate Earth Sciences Week by learning how to make connections to a variety of STEM careers throughout an earthquake-proof house building activity and explore strategies for strengthening your practice in this area.
World Students Day
World Students’ Day is a celebration of multiculturalism, diversity, and cooperation among students across the globe. Check out the Strategies for Making All Youth Feel Included staff development guide.
Nuclear Science Day
Nuclear Science Week invites people from all over the globe to “Get to Know Nuclear” and participate in a week-long celebration that advances education, stimulates participation and generates communication that provides insight and visibility for the achievements of the nuclear sciences.
Conflict Resolution Day
Learn how to Manage conflict in STEM with this Managing Conflict Video-Based Learning Module and develop conflict resolution strategies for different scenarios.
International Observe the Moon Night
International Observe the Moon Night is an annual worldwide public event that encourages observation and appreciation of the Moon. All are invited to observe the Moon, learn about NASA planetary science and exploration, and celebrate cultural and personal connections to our nearest neighbor.
Celebrate this special day with our Prepping for Learning staff development guide where participants will experience a poorly facilitated STEM activity and develop a list of considerations to make when planning for STEM learning as you build a contraption that can take someone to the moon.
National Chemistry Week
National Chemistry Week (NCW) encourages people to build awareness of chemistry at the local level and to promote the value of chemistry in everyday life. NCW 2018 theme is "Chemistry is Out of This World." Check out the NCW 2018 edition of Celebrating Chemistry for more information and online resources.
Animation is everywhere these days, and most of us have been raised on it. Starting with our Saturday Morning Cartoons that we enjoyed with our sugary bowl of cereal, straight through to our favorite video games and movies of today, our view of the world has often been shaped by this amazing art form.
